How UAE overtime is calculated
Per MoHRE guidance, the basic hourly wage is calculated as basic monthly salary ÷ 30 ÷ 8 — not the total salary including allowances. Normal overtime beyond regular working hours is paid at that hourly wage plus at least 25%. Overtime worked between 10:00 pm and 4:00 am is paid at the hourly wage plus at least 50% — this night uplift does not apply to shift workers.
- Normal overtime: (basic salary ÷ 30 ÷ 8) × 1.25 × overtime hours
- Night overtime (10pm–4am): (basic salary ÷ 30 ÷ 8) × 1.50 × overtime hours
Worked example
Basic salary AED 6,000, 10 eligible normal overtime hours: hourly wage = AED 6,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = AED 25.00. Normal overtime pay = AED 25.00 × 1.25 × 10 = AED 312.50. If the same 10 hours instead qualified for the night uplift (and the employee is not a shift worker), the pay would be AED 25.00 × 1.50 × 10 = AED 375.00.
⚠️ Normal working hours are generally 8 hours/day or 48 hours/week, and daily overtime normally shouldn't exceed 2 hours except under specified conditions. Rest-day and public-holiday work follow separate compensation rules — don't apply the ordinary 1.25 multiplier to those. This calculator covers ordinary overtime only; always verify against your employment contract and current MoHRE guidance before relying on the figure for payroll.
